I need help with this, anyone has a tip for me?Views: 573

OK guys, I am working on optimizing my website for the search engines, (100+ pages), and changing my system to a completely different shopping cart and payment processor. Right now I don't have the resources to hire someone else to do it, so I decided to do it myself. No problem, I know how to do it, I have all the time, the problem is...

I get soooooo overwhelmed, I wrote the "usual" things to do list, but even that confuses me.

Does any of you have a tip to get me organized and focus on my project?

Thanks in advance,
Mariangie

Mariangie:

Use the mind map technique that we've discussed in this forum to break down the project. Next, you must create a daily task list so you can stay on track. Give up the "what if" and circular thinking so you can focus.

Realize that you are very intelligent, because you have so much going on in your head (in the wrong order) it will be overwhelming. So just embrace that part.

Now, in order to optimize your site for the search engines, if you have 100 pages, you also have 100 tasks. Be realistic about the time it will take. If you do one page per day, it will take 100 days. Next, to change your payment processor, give yourself exactly 2 hours to get this done.

Get a timer, set it and do not accept distrations until you are done or the timer goes off. If you can't finish in time, set another time limit. BUT, when you are finished with your first two hours, give yourself a break. Do something fun and then get back to work.

Hope that helps.

Stephanie

Thanks Stephanie, I just got here today, so I'll look for the mind mapping technique you're talking about and follow your advice. I feel better already.

When I get stuck like that, I have to tell my "just start." Pick one item and just do it. Once I've broken the overwhelm/can't get started mode, it usually passes. And, it takes major willpower to say "just stop ... go do this one thing ... don't think about anything else ... just do it." And then make yourself start.

Have fun!

I totally agree with what Stephanie said about setting the timer and going until you either finish or the timer goes off. Of course, I have a major attention span problem, and could never work on anything, even if it was something I was really interested in, for two hours straight without a break.

Whenever possible, I break everything down into 10-15 minute increments. I will work on a specific task for 10-15 minutes, and then when my timer goes off I start a different task or decide if I can keep going on the task I'm working on and reset my timer. After every 2-3 segments of "work" time I set my timer for 10 minutes of "me" time. Sometimes it's browsing my favorite message board or reading emails, sometimes it's a quick game of solitaire, sometimes it's even a quick few pages in the book I'm reading. I've even been known to skip my me time if I was almost done with the project anyway, and then I give myself 20 minutes when I'm done instead. Some people can't handle the distraction in the middle of a project. I find I need it to work most efficiently, otherwise I do things quickly and sloppily because I just want to finish and move on to something else.

Of course, at my home my 3-year old daughter is also a major factor in me breaking things down into much smaller segments. It's a lot easier to tell her mommy is busy for a few more minutes and then help her or give her whatever attention it is she needs than it is to tell her she has to wait until mommy is all the way done and make her wait for an hour or more. Also, if she is "helping" me with the household chores, 10 minutes is about as long as my patience lasts for doing a job that only takes 5 minutes if I do it by myself. She loves my timer and whenever it rings she will come to see what it is I'm doing and if it's her play time yet or not.

The key is to find the method that will work best for you and then stick to it. If you tell yourself you will work for two hours or until you are done, then you better be prepared to work for two hours. If you can't commit yourself to two hours then set whatever time limit will work for you and the task at hand.
